Chimney Inspections Done Right the First Time

We Offer Both Level One Chimney Inspection and Level Two Chimney Inspection

Many homeowners don’t realize that there are actually three levels of chimney inspection, according to the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA). A Level Three inspection involves the temporary removal of entire components of your chimney apparatus, such as the interior wall. While JCS Home Services does perform chimney crown and chimney cap replacement and installation, we do not offer a Level Three chimney inspection.

But we do provide a Level Two and a Level One chimney inspection – and that’s a service which homeowners really benefit from.

In a Level One chimney inspection, the JCS Home Services technician visually inspects the readily accessible components of your home’s chimneys and fireplaces, including the outer hearth, inner hearth, firebox, throat, smoke chamber, flue opening, damper, and exterior masonry. Armed with a flashlight and the eyes of experience, we look for cracks in the masonry, creosote buildup on the walls, and excessive soot in and around the fireplace. We’re looking for areas of potential danger from a chimney fire – and both soot and creosote are flammable, so we pay careful attention to look for that.

Level Two chimney inspections go even farther. When JCS performs a Level Two inspection, we use a video camera to scan the exterior and the interior of the chimney masonry. The advantage of using video is the ability to see gaps and cracks that might not be apparent with a visual-only Level One chimney inspection. In addition, Level Two inspections come with a written report that fully outlines the chimney’s overall condition.

Why Should Homeowners Get Their Chimney Cleaned and Inspected Once a Year?

The Need for In-Depth, Thorough Inspections Is Tantamount to the Need for Quality Cleaning Service

Chimneys ought to be inspected about once every 12 months, ideally before the cold season sets in. If you don’t know when you last had your chimney professionally inspected, then the next time should be soon.

Chimneys are like any other equipment: They need to be properly maintained in order to function as they should. Using a chimney – whether it’s equipped with a wood-burning fireplace or a gas stove – results in cracks in the masonry, wear-and-tear of accessories like crowns and caps, and potentially dangerous accumulations of soot, creosote, and other inflammables that could cause serious problems such as chimney fires.

Customers in the Northern Virginia region who own a house with a chimney are well-advised to hire JCS Home Services for complete chimney inspection and chimney sweep services – at least once a year.
